Film Review: Suburbicon 2017 (6/10)

Suburbicon

Director and Co-writer George Clooney

Starring: Matt Damon , Julian Moor

It only took Matt Damon name on the movie poster for me to decide to book the centime ticket. Not only I enjoy Matt Damon performance and of course his handsome look but I trust his choices on the roles he takes and the movies he decides to appear in.

This time round I didn’t know he is co-starting with the beautiful Julian Moor or the movie is written and directed by George Clooney …..both are also my favorites … I just saw his name and I decided this will be a film worth watching …. and so it was.

This movie will take you through some kind of ups and downs in trying to decide whether you are enjoying it or not ….the movie is set in the fifties in a highly racial discriminating American neighborhood …. It starts with a beautiful colorful scene of this neighborhood and the movie goes very slow for a while ….. events starts getting more interesting and after a short while it turns in to comedy violence ….at this point I wasn’t sure if I like it or not … I am not the type who enjoys black comedy with violence ….. however ….. when the movie finished I was wowed.

The film comes with a big message to the American people and maybe to the entire world which seems to be moving towards discrimination, isolation and violence.

As I mentioned above, I love the performance of Matt Damon in whatever he does and can see clearly why he accepted and maybe wanted to be in this film. I have some doubts regarding the performance of Julian Moor, while I usually really l like her I am not sure she was the right choice for this role.

The major flow in the movie is it fails badly in striking a balance between the big message it tries to convey and the extreme black comedy it presented. In my opinion I think such a message needed a more serious type of movie to convey it. Of course I am not a movie maker but I suspect this is a directing issue.

It is for sure not a box office movie and this explains the empty cinema theater at which I attended the movie and will not be surprised if the movie is removed within a week or so. I am also not surprised that Rotten Tomatoes and other movie rating websites have given it one star.

My score is 6 out of 10 as I still think it is a film worth watching.

I had seen the film before and saw it again today. I don’t rate very high and I think it is mainly a crime story set in small countryside town in the fifties. These towns were and still are the seat of racialism and bigotry ad the movie shows this environment very well.
It also shows the violence and corruption of the the American society.
The acting of Mat Damon and Julia Moore was not remarkable.
Your review gives a good idea of to expect to see and I think is objective enough for me.

This is a black comedy type movie, I like how the film represent Trump’s America today …. that is mainly what I liked about the film. I am in general not a fan of Black comedy and I don’t think this film is for everyone.
