Director: Craig Gillespie
Starring: Margot Robbie, Allison Janney , Sebastian Stan
This film in short shows the life of the figure ice skater Tonya Harding leading to the 1994 attack on her rival Nancy Kerrigan.
Tonya Harding was not just any figure ice skater, in 1991 she earned distinction as being the first American woman to successfully land a triple axel in competition, and only the second woman to ever do so in history (behind Midori Ito). She is also a two-time Olympian and a two-time Skate America Champion. But sadly, she got disqualified in 1994 and banned for life from the U.S figures Skating Championship following the attach on her rival Nancy Kerrigan by her ex-husband Jeff Gillooly.
I watched the movie without any previous knowledge about this famous ice skater or the attack which back then was the focus of the media and was astonished to see how every character in the film was so believable.
The Director Craig Gillespie and writer Steven Rogers have given each character the depth it needed, so the focus was not only on Tonya Harding but also on her mother (played beautifully by Allison Janney ) and her husband Jeff Gillooly (equally beautifully performed by Sebastian Stan). I probably would have wanted to know if her coaches had any impact on her as well but they weren’t given much attention.
The film was cleverly made by telling the story through interviews with the main characters making the film look like a documentary displaying many versions of the truth and giving the feeling of no specific bias. This was mostly influenced by how the real Tonya and Jeff told the story to the writer.
Margot Robbie proved here she is an outstanding actress and not only pretty face in Hollywood, she had to train on ice skating for 4 months, and at the same time had to copy a well-known figure who is still alive. You don’t need to know the original Tonya Harding to appreciate Margot Robbie performance but honestly following the movie I had to watch the real Tonya Harding performing and I was impressed by how beautifully Margot Robbie has portrayed her.
It is worth mentioning Robbie Margot was also a co-producer of this film, she chose to make the film and the role which shows how much she believed in herself.
This film was quite an eye opener to show what does those sport champions go through to get to where they are. Despite all the controversy surrounding the 1994 scandal this film gives perspective on what Tonya Harding went through to get her to that point
This is for sure on my list of the best films made in 2017, it deserves all nominations and winning it got and I thing Sebastian Stan should have been nominated for best supporting actor.
