Film Review: The Mountain Between Us 2017 (5/10)

The Mountain between us

Director: Hany Abu-Assad

Starring: Kate Winslet and Idris Elba

This film relies totally on the charm of the main lead performers Kate Winslet and Idris Elba plus the beautiful scenery of beautiful mountains covered in snow. However, neither the story was deep nor the plot was convincing.

The other thing, while the film focuses on how two strangers have to trust each other in their attempts to survive a deadly fate which results in them forming a warm bond …. It suddenly reduces this profound experience in to some kind of a fairy tale. And in my opinion, this was probably the main failure in the film.

Having said this, I somehow enjoyed watching Kate Winslet and Idris Elba with both of them having lots of charm, charisma and nice chemistry between them.

I was also super happy to know this film is directed by a Dutch director from Palestinian origins (Hany Abu-Assad) who managed to climb the ladder in the film industry to make it to Hollywood following the immigration of his family in early eighties. He has received two Academy Award nominations: in 2006 for his film Paradise Now, and again in 2013, at the 86th Awards, for his film Omar. Therefore, even if this film didn’t fully meet expectations I believe future movies will be big hits.
